Sustainability
Taking responsibility. Conserving resources. Securing the future.
Sustainability is an integral part of Hempel Special Metals' corporate strategy. We are committed to the responsible use of resources, climate-conscious action and ethical and socially responsible corporate governance.
We take a pragmatic approach to this: sustainable measures should be both ecologically sound and economically viable. We are guided by ISO standards and the EcoVadis assessment.
Our suppliers are actively involved in our sustainability analyses to ensure transparency, compliance and continuous improvement.
Sustainability management – measures and impact
| Focus | Measures | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Raw materials & resources | Substitution of plastic with glass & wood, optimised use of materials | Improved recyclability of resources |
| Employee mobility | Promotion of public transport, bicycle use, hybrid and electric vehicles | Employee awareness, CO₂ reduction |
| Transport & logistics | Return of scrap containers and barrels, avoidance of empty runs | Reduction of CO₂ emissions |
| Efficient use of materials | Use of metal scraps in the supply chain (cradle-to-cradle principle) via the Econoxx.com trading platform Circular economy: Return of stainless steel and titanium scrap | >250 online transactions/year, reduced use of primary materials Reduction of CO₂ emissions |
| Energy efficiency | LED lighting, sensors, optimisation of operating times, use of renewable energies (CH 100%) and solar panels (Poland, UK under review) | Reduction in electricity and heating costs CO2 reduction |
We systematically record our carbon footprint and use the results as a basis for continuous improvement. In doing so, we also take existing conditions into account, such as the building stock.
Social responsibility is important to us. We support young athletes (locally and internationally), sports clubs, musicians, study projects, organisations for people with disabilities and other charitable organisations at home and abroad.
